What made you that way?

No offence, but I hate this question. It's not your fault though. There is, as far as most research goes, only one likely way to become a multiple and that is to suffer trauma, usually severe trauma, in childhood, generally repeatedly.

The theory is, and all my experience and knowledge tends to point in this direction too, that the trauma is so difficult for a child that this really interesting defense mechanism 'splits' the developing personality into parts - one to deal with the trauma, and one to go on with life. Over time these can develop differently, or some parts might not develop and be stuck in that trauma (suspended in time, if you like).

A lot has been written about the trauma. While I won't necessarily avoid it, I'm trying not to focus on it too much here. Unfortunately when people have focused on the more sensational aspects of multiplicity, the result has been that multiples are seen as dysfunctional. While being a multiple is certainly a challenge, many multiples are highly functional and respected members of society.

There are other views of how multiplicity develops, or rather, that it is present in some people starting from birth. One start to examining this point of view is the Dark Personalities site.
