Definition: Executive Control

Executive control is about having control over the body's movements and activities. People can have executive control for a few minutes, a few hours, or several years.

We're not sure what determines who has executive control when. We know that people often give up executive control when they're particularly scared. But sometimes people seize executive control when a situation is particularly familiar to them. Some people take it when they are around a person that they particularly like. When this is happening, I (Teresa) experience it as switching.

Sometimes I encourage people to take executive control for a while so that they can write or draw.

One of the most interesting effects that online gaming has had for me is allowing people to express themselves without having to give up executive control. I'm not sure if this is an effect of having a fair amount of co-consciousness or a cause, but I certainly appreciate it - most of the time!
