in the forest
I was seen - not this shell
But deep inside me
Who I was and who I am.
Why were you looking?
I was touched - it burned,
Right through my skin
And so I fled right out the door
And slammed it shut behind me.
I am lost in the forest of my soul,
With bats and snakes -
And wolves and thieves -
And all the bushes have their thorns
And someone killed the unicorns.
Oh, I'm howling at the moon
But it won't light my way.
I'm scared to find the witch's tree
Because you know the witch is me-
Wandering these woods.
I'm lost.
In this forest of my soul.
I was heard - my shrieks
Of rage and somehow
Nothing new was gained
Except my throat is raw.
I was scared that you would
Taste me; bitter;
Poison to your blood and
So I'm twisting shut the lid.
I am lost in the forest of my soul,
With bats and snakes -
And wolves and thieves -
And all the bushes have their thorns
And someone killed the unicorns.
Oh, I'm howling at the moon
But it won't light my way.
I'm scared to find the witch's tree
Because you know the witch is me-
Wandering these woods.
I'm lost.
In this forest of my soul.
The branches scratch my arms,
And all the shadows touch my hand -
I'm running from myself and
So the woods will never end.
I am lost in the forest of my soul,
With bats and snakes -
And wolves and thieves -
And all the bushes have their thorns
And someone killed the unicorns.
Oh, I'm howling at the moon
But it won't light my way.
I'm scared to find the witch's tree
Because you know the witch is me-
Wandering these woods.
I'm lost.
In this forest of my soul.
I never turned to see if
You had come to follow me
And I scream into the air -
Turn back, turn back - I care -
I don't want you to lose yourself and
Yet I slow down to a walk
And hope that if you came this way
You have a skein of wool, or chalk.
I'm scared to find the witch's tree
Because you know the witch is me-
Wandering these woods.
I'm lost.
In this forest of my soul.
Will you bring some berries and
A trail of crumbs - a compass
And a tent into -
This forest of my soul.
